News archive - 2012
9 November 2012 - We have published a set of maps of the wards which were used in 1995 for the initial elections to Scotland's current 32 unitary local authorities. These wards resulted from a series of Ministerial Directions, and were based on the wards which we recommended in our Second Reviews of Electoral Arrangements for District Councils. The maps are available on the Maps section of this website, along with more recent ward maps.
4 September 2012 - We have published our Annual Report for 2011-12, which is available from the Publications section of the website.
26 July 2012 - We have published 2 further Information Papers in our series, which are available from the Publications section of this website. The first of these is Administrative area reviews: guidance which explains how we conduct our reviews of the external boundaries of local government areas in Scotland. The second is Local government area boundaries in Scotland: before 1975 which explains the counties, burghs and districts which covered Scotland when we were established in 1973.
19 July 2012 - We have published our meeting papers from 2011 and the early part of 2012 which are available from the Publications section of this website. They include our discussions on our intended approach to the Fifth reviews of local government electoral arrangements which we expect to commence in 2013. We expect that those reviews will result in revised electoral wards for use in the local government elections to be held in May 2017.
18 July 2012 - We have published the draft minutes from our meeting of 4 July 2012 which are available from the Publications section of this website.
20 June 2012 - Scottish Ministers have announced the reappointment of Bill Magee as Deputy Chairman of the Commission. Bill has been reappointed for the period 1 September 2012 to 31 August 2016, continuing his current appointment which began on 1 September 2008. The Scottish Government has issued a News Release which is available on its website.
8 June 2012 - Scottish Ministers have issued a Direction which continues the instruction to us not to carry out the periodic reviews of local government area boundaries which would otherwise be required under section 14(1) of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. The Direction is available from the Legislation section of this website. Mr Derek Mackay, Minister for Local Government and Planning, gave a keynote address at the SOLACE Scotland conference on 1 June 2012, in which he reaffirmed the Scottish Government's commitment not to reorganise Scottish local government in the foreseeable future, and noted the existence of the Direction.
